A Stately Buffet in Liquorice
This stately buffet was refurbished by Mary from Orphans With Makeup with Liquorice. Isn't it gorgeous?!

It’s Mary from Orphans With Makeup. I recently had the pleasure of custom painting this HUGE buffet. I think it is one of the largest pieces I have worked on. The client wanted it painted black so we went ahead with "Liquorice".
This amazing piece of furniture had markings that it was Made in England. I’ve never seen a piece of furniture built like this. It actually is built in 6 sections. The full top is one piece, which sits on the cabinets. The cabinets are three modules (left cabinet, middle cabinets and right cabinet), then the bottom base is another section. They all are fitted with square pegs that slide into each other. No screws to put it together, except for the backsplash. Definitely great design.
To prep this piece, I cleaned the buffet with a degreaser and gave it a light sanding all over. Then wiped it with a lint-free rag and also wiped it down with tack cloth. This step is very important with black paint as any dust will show. It required two coats of “Liquorice” and again, wiping down with tack cloth after each application.
The client wanted a good amount of distressing. With black, my preferred method of distressing is with a wet pot-scrubber and not a sanding block. I try to avoid dust as much as possible after the paint goes on.
After painting and distressing was completed, it was sealed with wax. Since the weather was really warm, I waited a full three days after painting before sealing it.
As mentioned above, this buffet is so huge that no matter what props I tried to style this, they always looked tiny, even with this huge clock supplied by Le Deja Vu, so I decided to superimpose a back and white image as a background in LightRoom. To kind of look like a mural. This helped to fill in the blank white walls.
