Happy Hour & Hurricane Dresser
Crystal from The Driftwood Home decided to go for a bold color block design with this mid century modern dresser in Hurricane and Happy Hour!I’ve been working on a lot of rustic and distressed pieces and wanted to take a break to work on some creative pieces. I really like working on modern style finishes when I feel the need to do something different, because modern pieces really challenge you to open your mind to colors and designs. When I saw this dresser on my local offerup site, I knew it had the potential to go from generic wood to something fabulous.
My plan was to do a geometric design on some of the flat areas/ and sides, but bleed through proved me wrong. I also encountered some other issues with the surface area that prolonged the finishing of this project and in the end I just decided to scrap the designs and make a statement with color.
I am so glad that I let the colors be the statement on this piece. I chose Happy Hour and Hurricane by Country Chic Paint. These two colors are on my top 5 favorite colors by Country Chic Paint.
I sprayed three coats of Happy Hour on the smaller drawers and three coats of Hurricane on the larger drawers and base. I also added three coats of a satin Clear Coat for protection and polished off with a beeswax for bit of shine.
Even though my original vision for this piece didn’t come to fruition, I'm so glad that it I was able to make a really unique piece with some beautiful colors. I think they pair well nicely and are gender neutral. This was a true lesson that sometimes, you just have to go with the flow and let the color speak for itself!

We are Jake & Crystal Sutton, owners of The Driftwood Home! Jake & I are both Active Duty military serving in the US Air Force. We spend our days driving across San Antonio picking up furniture that’s ready for a new look. Jake is the prep guru and does everything from sanding, to routing, to reinforcing shaky foundations. I make things pretty with my spray gun and paint brush, and design all the pieces from top to bottom. Although this is not our primary job, this is our future and every day we work harder to make our dreams of one day opening our own furniture store come true.
