Rustic Blanket Ladder

Crystal from The Driftwood Home went for a modern minimalist look on this rustic blanket ladder in Vanilla Frosting!
In the midst of our downsizing and future move, we are definitely focusing on clearing as much inventory as we can. I had completely forgotten about these rustic Mexican blanket ladders I picked up in El Paso this past summer, but they were sitting hidden in my office behind the furniture hoard.

I rarely have time to do small projects anymore but I figured this would take me only a couple hours to paint and finish (don’t know why I procrastinated). It really was a 2-hour project and figured a “dipped” look would complement this rustic ladder well. It blends primitive western with modern and minimalist styles so it really is a versatile look.

I taped off where I wanted the dipped part to begin and made sure to wrap the unpainted ends with paper to protect from overspray. I kid you not, it took me 3 minutes to apply the first coat of Country Chic Paint in “Vanilla Frosting” to the ladder. Because the wood was so porous, I sprayed about three coats, which is average for a white color on wood. After that, I sanded off the raised grain did touchups where it was needed.

The I used a gloss enamel to seal in the paint. I chose this because I knew it would provide a super hard coating and didn’t want blankets or quilts to snag. So I enamel coated the surface and gave it a bit of a smoother feel.

I really love the way this turned out because it’s easy, it’s stylish, and it’s functional. Most people who want to start painting furniture start with small projects like this. It’s easy to get creative and come up with a look that not only works for you but also your home. What do you think?

We are Jake & Crystal Sutton, owners of The Driftwood Home! Jake & I are both Active Duty military serving in the US Air Force. We spend our days driving across San Antonio picking up furniture that’s ready for a new look. Jake is the prep guru and does everything from sanding, to routing, to reinforcing shaky foundations. I make things pretty with my spray gun and paint brush, and design all the pieces from top to bottom. Although this is not our primary job, this is our future and every day we work harder to make our dreams of one day opening our own furniture store come true.
