The Georgia Bench

Carrie from Thirty Eighth Street is joining us today for her first Country Chic Paint blog post! She refurbished this sweet little Georgia bench with Liquorice.

Last month, the stars were all aligned as I dragged my husband from one estate sale to the next. At our second stop, we came across this lovely vintage "Jenny Lind" style piano bench. Before I could say the word spindle, I said that I wanted her. She had dings and scratches for days... and that upholstery? Well, let's just say that it wasn't doing her any favors. My husband politely reminded me that we didn't own a piano. But, it didn't matter... I had big plans for Ms. Georgia.

First thing was first. We unfastened the upholstery seat and discarded not one, but two vintage fabrics and it's batting. (Boy, did this piece have history and dust!) Once the base was separated, we opened up a brand new can of Country Chic Paint in Liquorice. We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was very little odor coming from this clay based paint. You know what else we fell in love with? The drying time, as well as the coverage. This chalk style paint dries so quickly! And would you believe that it only took 1.5 coats to get this gorgeous coverage?

We wanted a distressed Spanish feel with this piece so we applied the second coat only in certain areas so that its original chippiness would peak through. After the base was protected with wax, we focused our energy on a simple re-upholstery update using a Suzani inspired fabric to give the seat an eye-catching pop of color. With just a little bit of paint and fabric, we transformed this old and outdated piano bench into a quaint seating area for our entry way.

Here are a few up and close photos of Ms. Georgia in her new space. A stylish and functional piece for what I hope are many more years to come!

Hi! I’m Carrie from sunny Southern Arizona and blogger at Thirty Eighth Street. I live in a house full of rumble tumble boys and paint is my nail polish. I love the process of repurposing, reusing and recycling unloved furniture and turning them into show stopper pieces. I’m a firm believer that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to decorate a home. My mission is to demonstrate this, one piece at a time!
