Fresh flowers are a classic Valentine’s Day favorite and for good reason. They’re beautiful, thoughtful, and full of meaning. This year, we’re pairing that same floral charm with a creative project you can enjoy making and displaying with a handmade touch 💐
For this Valentine’s craft, we’re showing you how to paint metal flowers using Country Chic Paint’s Clear Bonding Primer, so your painted finish stays smooth, durable, and chip-resistant. It’s a lovely way to celebrate the season with color, texture, and creativity.
Step 1: Prep Your Flowers
Before painting, wipe your metal flowers clean with a damp cloth to remove dust or oils. Let them dry completely.
Apply a thin, even coat of Clear Bonding Primer over the metal. Because it dries clear, it won’t affect your color choice just the durability. Let it dry for minimum 12 hours before moving onto the next step.
✨ Tip: One coat is usually enough, but for very smooth or slick metal, a second light coat adds extra peace of mind. A second coat also might be a good idea if the piece is going outside.

Making This a Kid-Friendly Project 🌈
If you’d like to turn this into a purely kid-friendly activity, simply swap the metal flowers for paper or leftover cardboard cut outs. Cut flower shapes together, paint them with Country Chic Paint, and let them dry before assembling your bouquet. It’s a fun way for kids to explore color and creativity—no metal tools required.
Step 2: Paint Your Flowers
Our Artist Brushes work best for this project, especially for smooth coverage, curved edges, and adding small details. Their softer bristles make it easier to control paint on metal and paper surfaces. Once primed (or cut and ready, for paper or cardboard), paint your flowers using your favorite Country Chic Paint colors. Warm reds like Paint the Town, creamy whites like Crinoline, or cheerful pastels like Bee's Knees, Wisteria and Darling all work beautifully for Valentine’s Day. We choose Raspberry Sorbet, Paint the Town and Ooh La La for our flowers.
You can:
- Dry brush for a rustic look
- Layering colors for extra depth
- Add dots, stripes, or hand-drawn details
Seal painted metal pieces with our Clear Coat if they’ll be handled often or will be kept outdoors.

What About the Stems?
Yes...you can absolutely paint these too!
Great stem options include:
- Wooden dowels or skewers (easy and kid-friendly)
- Cut Construction or other Heavy Paper (also kid and environment friendly)
- Floral wire or metal rods (prime first for durability)
- Repurposed materials like straightened metal hangers or garden stakes or sticks.
We chose to use scrap watercolor paper! Paint stems green like Secret Garden or Sage Advice. We chose a dark teal, Aurora. Attach flowers with glue gun or if using cardboard, a glue stick. Make sure to glue your stems down first before your flowers.
Creating a 2D Vase on Canvas
Since this bouquet is designed as wall art, the vase can be completely flat and painted right onto the canvas.
Here are a few simple, creative ideas:
- Painted vase silhouette directly onto the canvas using a stencil or freehand shape
- Paper or cardboard vase cutout, painted and glued on for light dimension
- Faux “glass” look using soft brushstrokes and highlights
- Patterned vase with stripes, florals, or hand-drawn details
Paint the vase to complement your flowers, then layer stems over top so the bouquet feels cohesive and complete—all without adding bulk.
A Valentine’s Project Made with Love
Whether you’re crafting solo, with kids, or with someone special, this painted flower bouquet is a joyful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with creativity and care. With Clear Bonding Primer, painting metal—or almost any surface—becomes simple and stress-free.
