Step-by-Step Furniture Transformation with Country Chic Paint

This project by Second Verse Foundry showcases the transformation of a vintage furniture piece using Country Chic Paint’s limited edition color Envious. The following steps detail the full restoration process from start to finish.

Start by assessing the piece for damage. Use a wood filler to rebuild missing trim and repair structural imperfections. Once the filler has dried, sand those areas smooth while preserving any natural character that adds to the piece's charm.

Next, sand the entire surface of the furniture using 80 grit sandpaper, followed by 120 grit, to create a surface ready for paint. After sanding, vacuum thoroughly and wash down all areas to remove any dust or debris.

To prevent any stain or wood tannin bleed-through, apply one coat of a shellac-based primer, such as Zinsser B-I-N, to the drawer interiors and structural components. Apply the primer with a brush and allow it to dry completely.

Begin painting the exterior of the piece by layering Country Chic Paint in Envious with Dark Roast. Apply three coats using a combination of wet-brushing, dry-brushing, and light misting techniques. Allow each coat to dry before lightly sanding with 220 grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth, layered finish.

Once the exterior is painted, move on to the drawer interiors. Use a soft, neutral color and apply two coats with a brush to give the inside of the drawers a clean, fresh look that complements the bold exterior.

To add depth and texture, use Redesign with Prima’s ‘Imperial Crackle’ decor stamp along with Country Chic Paint in Liquorice to apply a subtle pattern across the exterior. Apply the paint to the stamp with a roller and gently press it onto the surface for even coverage.

After the design has dried, seal the entire exterior with Country Chic Paint Natural Wax. Use a brush or a lint-free rag to apply one coat, buffing it to a soft, protective finish that enhances the color and texture of the paint.

For an added decorative detail, decoupage the sides of the drawers using Redesign with Prima’s "Washed Damask" paper. Apply it using a sponge and a water-based poly sealer for a clean, smooth finish.

Finally, spray the entire exterior with a clear protective topcoat, such as Rustoleum Painter’s Touch, to lock in the finish and provide additional durability.

This project by Second Verse Foundry demonstrates how layering color, texture, and detail can completely transform a dated piece into a one-of-a-kind treasure using Country Chic Paint’s new limited edition "Envious."
