Get The Look & Meet The Face Behind Weathered In White!

Meet Mare, the face behind Weathered In White! She's a furniture-flipping, woodworking-loving creative who knows how to turn a forgotten piece into something truly special! After 11 years in the DIY community, she’s found a fulfilling way to spend retirement doing what she loves while giving old furniture a new life! Learn more about Mare below!

What is your favorite CCP Color?

"I am a neutral girl and my favorite color of yours I would have to say is Soirée! It’s the only color I use to color wash when I want a light color finish to remove the yellow from the wood. But I also love it just to use as a neutral painting color."

What is your favorite tool?

"I would have to say my favorite tool is my Kreg pocket hole jig. I recently learned how to make bases for all different kinds of pieces such as nightstands, dressers or even cedar chests. And that tool comes in very handy."

Where do you find your design ideas or color palettes?

"Of course, like most of us we get ideas from following others, but I would have to say because I’m such a neutral color lover. I stay with more warm and neutral colors that will fit into any decor. Once in a while I’ll throw something different in the mix just to break up the monotony of monotone shades. I do my best thinking at night when I’m laying in bed lol!   I’ll dream up something in my head occasionally, like those wooden flowers that I searched for and found for my pink dresser. I wanted something different from the whole mold trend and I am a wood lover, so I began searching for something wooden that I could decorate a piece with. Hence the birth of my pink dresser!"

What’s a fun fact about you most people don’t know?

"What most people don’t know about me? I’d have to say first and foremost I was a dancer in my younger years. I took lessons for 10 years and taught for four years. We did fun trips to NYC and danced with pros and I’ve even won a few dance contests following those 14 years . I’ve always been very athletic, I was a shortstop on a softball team, and I have always been a gymrat and worked with a personal trainer for ten years, 6 days a week. I have two children and 5 grandchildren whom I treasure."

How has being part of the DIY or refinishing community impacted you?

"This diy community has made my retirement so fulfilling for the last 11 years. I’m 100% Italian and I’m not a person to sit around and not accomplish something every single day so furniture is where I’ve spend  most of my hours every day doing what I love! I pride myself on saving our environment. I have learned so much and do all my own repairs and woodworking and I think we all learn from each other ! Additionally I have met some of my closest friends through this community and I treasure every single one of them and the relationships we’ve built."

Are you ready to see how Mare got this look?

-This dresser needed a real good cleaning so Mare used Dawn Power Wash (it belonged to a smoker).

-After it was thoroughly dry she used a Carbide Scraper on the top to remove a lot of the varnish before she sanded it, then sanded it to raw wood and scuff sanded the entire rest of the dresser.

-Repairs on the dovetailing were done.

-A warm brown was used to color wash the top, followed by four coats of water-based Polyurethane to create a durable finish.

-She then added three coats of a discontinued Country Chic Paint color, 'Vintage Cupcake', and after it dried she used a high grit sanding block to create a smooth buttery finish.

-After 24 hours, the drawers were dry enough for her to start creating a look she visualized… somewhat like wild flowers popping up. She placed the pulls on the drawers so she could properly space out the wooden flowers, hand painted glue on each flower backing with a small brush, removed the pulls, and carefully clamped paint sticks over each flower to prevent movement and to ensure a tight adhesion.

-Lastly she put on all the pulls back on and lined and conditioned every drawer inside and out.
